The America Play

By Suzan Lori-Parks

Designed for Firehouse Theatre

The America Play follows a black Lincoln impersonator in the Reconstruction who lets white men reenact Lincoln’s assassination on him for money. The design invokes imagery of Lincoln’s log cabin and the chair he was assassinated with, along with a mulch pit known simply in the script as “The Great Hole of History.” Designed for Richmond’s Firehouse Theatre, the scent of the mulch is meant to fill up the intimate space and remind the viewer of what secrets are buried and the meaning of soil in the African Diaspora.
